The Scheme

Selly Oak Shopping Park

In 2013 Birmingham City Council (BCC) resolved to grant outline consent for a mixed-use scheme comprising a foodstore on stilts, retail, student accommodation and a life sciences campus. Harvest (Joint Venture between Landsec and Sainsbury's), subsequently achieved reserved matters consent in 2015 for the foodstore led element of the development.

Remediation and Services Diversion works (RSD) to clear up the former metal bashing and landfill site commenced in June 2014, taking a little over two years to complete. The life science site was then sold to BCC.

Further detailed design and market testing was undertaken by the joint venture, and construction started on site in August 2017.

The scheme will comprise a large Sainsburys’s foodstore on stilts (120,000 sqft), 70,000 sqft of further retail/restaurants/cafes arranged over 13 units, and a 418 bed student block to be operated by Unite.

The retail element is scheduled to open in September 2018, with Sainsbury’s opening in November. The student block will be ready for the 2019 academic year.
